Ingredients:

  • 2 fluid ounces Rye Whiskey (or high-proof Bourbon)
  • 1 fluid ounce Amaro (e.g., Averna or Montenegro)
  • 2 dashes Aromatic Bitters (e.g., Angostura)
  • 1 dash Orange Bitters (optional)
  • Large, solid ice cubes
  • 1 Maraschino Cherry (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Chill the Glassware: Place the serving glass (Coupe or Nick & Nora) into the freezer for at least 10 minutes, or fill it with ice water while preparing the cocktail. This is crucial for maintaining temperature.
  2. Prepare the Garnish: Set aside the high-quality Maraschino cherry. Alternatively, if using a twist, use a peeler to remove a strip of orange peel, avoiding the bitter white pith.
  3. Combine Liquid Ingredients: Pour the Rye Whiskey (2 oz) and the Amaro (1 oz) into the mixing glass.
  4. Add Bitters: Add 2 dashes of Aromatic Bitters (Angostura) and 1 dash of Orange Bitters directly into the mixing glass.
  5. Add Ice: Fill the mixing glass completely with large, solid ice cubes. Using large ice cubes minimizes rapid dilution.
  6. Stir Gently: Immediately begin stirring the mixture consistently and slowly with the bar spoon for 20–30 seconds, until the mixing glass feels frosty and the drink is icy cold and properly diluted.
  7. Strain: Empty the serving glass of any ice or water. Place the strainer over the mixing glass and strain the chilled cocktail directly into the cold serving glass.
  8. Garnish: Drop the Maraschino cherry into the glass. If using a twist, express the oils over the drink by twisting the peel, then rub the rim before serving immediately.
